Deutschland-Online is Germany's national eGovernment strategy pursued by the federal government, federal-state governments and municipal administrations
Modern government requires an innovative, effective and efficient administration. Information technologies and the Internet can make an important contribution to this end. Against this background, the heads of federal and federal-state governments adopted the Deutschland-Online action plan with five prioritised projects in June 2006 in order to interlink eGovernment activities of the three administrative levels even better and to ensure targeted cuts in bureaucracy costs.

A uniform communication infrastructure and standardised data exchange formats are a vital precondition for smooth electronic cooperation between the different administrative levels. Besides these basic infrastructure and standardisation projects, the action plan also covers three other projects which are directly orientated towards the needs of businesses and citizens, i.e. motor vehicle registration, civil status registers and citizens' registries. Further projects - for example, on geographic data and transport - are pursued parallel to the five prioritised projects under the Deutschland-Online umbrella brand.
